Doechii, born Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon, is a singer, songwriter, and four-time Grammy nominated rapper from Tampa, Florida signed to Top Dawg Entertainment. From beginnings of writing poetry in high school, along with ballet, tap, gymnastics and cheer, Doechii aspired to become a choral singer until producing independent music was suggested to her by a friend leading to early releases of projects such as, "Coven Music Session, Vol.1", and debuting her EP, "Oh the Places You'll Go," a self-funded endeavor.
With solid backing of a large label, and the understanding and trust to allow Doechii to produce a mixtape instead of an album, seeing less influence placed on the artist from the label, Doechii was allowed to flourish and speak her message in true form in a way that is resonating with a population who crave honesty and openness.
Now adding performances in the larger, mainstream media platforms like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, followed up with one of the grooviest and soulful performance with her all-black, all-woman band on NPR's Tiny Desk, we're able to see the dedication to detail and determinism to break out and make her message heard by the larger audiences.
